The Brown Book Project

On friday I met up with Emilie again after a very long time. I hadn't shot anything since may and I really needed to get started again. I felt really rusty, and my inspiration was low, but we managed to get something useful out of it. We mostly took a huge amount of silly pictures, but first I'm going to show you the pictures we took with the lensbaby. I quite like them, they are a bit different from what I have done before.

I have never been very good at illustrations. I find it hard to portray moods and stories in my drawings. But one night, my head decided that I should make a little series of illustrations, to a story I made up years ago. The script got made (I was trying to sleep, and couldn't really bother to pay that much attention to it, to be honest.) and the images were all done in my head. I eventually gave up, got up, and wrote it all down. Captions and directions and all. This is the only one I have been able to finish so far. It is frame four of nine. I hope I will be able to finish it one day. I actually managed to get this one as I wanted it to be! And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the hardest thing there is. To copy a vision in ones head.

Newspaper Blackout

A few months ago I discovered a wonderful idea. Newspaper Blackout is about taking a page of words, and then blacking out the ones you don't want to use, and making poems that way. I just had to try it myself, so here are my first ones.

Some ended up having a message, one is just surreal, and I like dorky boys. I think this kind of playing with words reveal things about the maker. What words they are attracted to, how they think. I find it very interesting!
You should try it, it is indeed very fun! Although, you get kinda obsessed, and everything you read end up like this in your head.

Yvonne and I spent the day exploring. First, the junk shop that was like heaven for me. It is basically a fleemarket, just that it's open every day. Rooms and rooms of other peoples used stuff, from furniture, to clothes to pictures to..well, everything! Not to mention, it was very cheap! I got myself 6 antique frames that it seems like noone but me likes for 100NOK. Usually, one of those frames would cost at least 150NOK. Going back there with some of my own junk to get some more frames later. haha. Got huge plans for them!
Then we explored the old Skotfoss Bruk. Several old buildings, some in good shape, some in really bad shape. I rediscovered my love for old and broken things that day. I really need to bring a model to that place one day!

It is so good to just get OUT. Specially after a few days isolated in my apartment. I went to a photo exhibition that Bilder Nordic School of Photography's 2nd year students had. I had to be there to support Desireé! And to look awkward. Sometimes, if I am in a really crowded place, I end up standing in a corner looking lost. It is even worse when I know of a lot of the people there, and I know that they know who I am... I get so shy and am almost afraid to go and say hi. It's so silly. haha. Luckily, some of them actually came over to me and said hi, so I stopped feeling too weird at that moment. (I need to work on that. And, I AM weird. No one can say anything different, so why should I care if someone thinks I am weird? (Yes, I think too much.)).
Anyways, here's some of the photos from today. Most are shot on the walk from the exhibition to my bus. Not my best photos, but photos nonetheless. Just a really, really random collection.

Desireé and I had a short photoshoot in the bathroom. Very successful!

If you are in Oslo, you should go see the exhibition. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of photographs, and they showed a huge range of creativity. Nice people too! More information here!

The Brown Book

As you probably have noticed by now, I have a thing for brown paper. Somehow, it inspires me a lot more than white paper. And everything look good on it! How is that really possible? Maybe it's just me. I like it.
Last week I bought a new book, size A5, all with brown paper and blank, brown covers. Sometimes I buy books like that just to have them. I do think I have a book fetish. Both the books I need to fill myself, and the books with wonderful stories. (No, really, you should see my shelves at my parents place, they are filled to the brink.)
I decided that this book was gonna be for mini collages, with a little drawing too. I have always wanted to get better at them. So this time, I said to myself: "I am going to make collages, and I am not to rip out the pages if I think the result is bad". I'm a perfectionist. I need to let loose, to stop giving a crap. I need to enjoy the process. Everything doesn't have to be worthy of showing anyone. This idea is kind of inspired by Tim Walker, who makes scrapbooks, just as I have done for a while. But I have never made collages that way. So far, I have filled four pages. I will show you the first one, as it is the one I like the most. I am still quite controlled, but I think I will get to the point I want to after a while. I don't know if it counts as collages just yet..But I will just call them that, in the lack of a better word.
I also have a bigger scrapbook that I have made collages in, some that I really like. I will show them to you, if you'd like!

I went for a walk around Huk today, at the end of Bygdøy, where I live. I plan on having a few shoots there soon (just like every other photographer in Oslo), so I had to check it out and get to know it better. The short walk I planned became a long one, and I took a ton of photos. At least now I know what to do on the shoots! I cant wait to shoot by the sea, as I have always had shoots in forests or fields. The colors are just magnificent out there.
Here are a bunch of the photos I took. I apologize that some are a bit similar, I just couldn't choose.

Tons of people out today, they were all "on boards on the water with dragons over their heads" as I managed to say to a friend. haha. That's what can be seen on a lot of the photos.

Yet again: the photos are actually more saturated. Except for the doubles, they are as they should be. Weird. Damn blogger, ruining my photos!

My street

I moved back to Oslo last October after living with my parents for 4 months. I got an apartment in a basement (Spiders! eew.), at Bygdøy. It is so beautiful here. Spring has rarely been this wonderful. My neighborhood is one of the rich places in Oslo. There are some big ass houses here, I never stop looking at them in awe. There are trees everywhere, and there is a harbor just at the end of my street. Just a few minutes with a bus, and I am by the sea. I can't wait to spend the summer here!
Today I went for a tiny walk in the nice weather, and I brought my camera with me.

Soon there will be more photos of people. I have a few jobs coming up, and a test with a model. Stay tuned!

So, to lighten up this blog a bit again, here are some of my more finished sketches. My scanner has decided to scan everything like I have smudged the edges...So I have put a texture on top. Guess I am too lazy to try to fix it. hehe. I just might make something finished from one of these. Time will tell!

My life with chronic illness - the short version

I used to think I was normal. That it was normal to wake up because your nose was bleeding, at least 4 times every week. That is was normal having such intense pain at the age of 9 that you started crying and couldn't sleep. That it was normal to be so fatigued after a day at school that one really didn't have any energy left to be social. Not that I WANTED to be social. I was a loner from an early age.

My pain got worse as I got older. The pain everyone said was because I was growing, never stopped. I was dragged from doctor to doctor, several visits to the hospitals. I was told it was imaginary. That I would grow out of it. That it was mental. Basically; no one believed me. Not the doctors, not my teachers, not my friends or fellow students. Naturally, I got depressed. I ditched school a lot, stopped caring. Even tried to take my life at one point. The severe mental illness I developed did not help with the physical, and visa verse. I was put on medication for the depression. I had some semi-good years. I managed to finish the two first years of high school thanks to some good people. Then it all went downhill again. I had never been that much of an outcast or misfit as I was then. The anxiety got worse, so did the pain.

After a bad stay at a hospital, I got the diagnosis fibromyalgia. At the age of 18. It's one of those diagnoses that has a huge list of symptoms. It has muscle pain as the main criteria, and then there's the other stuff. Troubles with sleep, lack of energy, mental issues..Doctors don't know why one gets it, or how to cure it. It's just a diffuse thing they put on people they give up. At least someone finally believed me.

The people around me and some of my so called friends did not believe me, however. They couldn't SEE anything, so of course there couldn't be anything wrong. I had to be an attention seeker. Mom always believed me, and I am very grateful for that. I couldn't have done anything without her. But I did lose a lot of friends. I got detached, I didn't let people in anymore. I really preferred to be alone. You know, when people keep questioning you like that, you start questioning yourself. Am I really sick? Are what they say true? Is this not real? That feeling is one of the worst feelings I have ever had. Sometimes I got so frustrated that I wanted to throw myself in front of a car, just to know that something I felt was real. So that other people too believed me for once and gave me the support I needed.

Two years ago I got mono/the kissing disease. I just never got better. I got the diagnosis ME/chronic fatigue syndrome. I think that is quite self explanatory. I still have a lot of pain, I sleep badly, and I have major mental issues. I am also very sick of being seen as lazy. I still feel like having to defend myself all the time. I just want some understanding. Or at least acceptance. But I guess it is hard to accept it when I don't accept it myself...

Last year I also got the diagnosis bipolar disorder. It fits so well with my issues over the years, my hypo manic behavior and my depressions. I am having issues accepting that, however. Will I have to be on medication the rest of my life? How AM I really without medication? My doctor and I decided I was going to stop taking my medication after almost 7 years. I need to get on new medications soon, but I really want to know how I truly am first. And get to know myself yet again. I have already had my worst manic episode ever after going off my medication. And of course followed the worst depressive episode I have had in years. I have to admit it's hard. Everything is so fucking hard. I have so much to work on, and if I start thinking about the amount, I get depressed and unmotivated.

I am currently waiting to get assigned a therapist. Hopefully I get a good one. One that can see through all the crap I usually give therapists. I don't work or go to school. I have enough with the day to day chores. Such as showering, going to the store, making food, cleaning and tidying the apartment... Some days I get exhausted after showering and have to rest. Other days I can get a lot done. Once in a while, I am social. But not often. I do have hope, though. Even though I have tried everything I can actually afford, I know that some day things will get better. Eventually.

This is highly personal...As personal as I have ever been on the internet. And it might be a bit disorganized... I am working on opening up without having a major breakdown. This is also just the short version. I have tons of emotions and issues I haven't mentioned here. But I guess it's a start?

If you have read this far, and have any tips for what I should try..save them. I have tried most of it, I know what I need to do. Yes, I am a difficult person by default. I need to figure things out on my own. You can't force change or progress. It has to come in it's own time. One needs to be ready. It's not that I don't get that some people just wants to help, but sometimes I just need to feel some humanity and get some support. And not that feeling I get when people are trying to "fix" me. If this sounds harsh, I apologize. If you yourself are sick, you will most likely recognize this feeling. I fully realize that this does not help to get support..

Practice makes perfect

Or so they say... The past years I have been a lazy bum with my art. A really, really lazy bum. I have stuck to the things I knew, not challenging myself at all. There are some exceptions, of course, but it never lasted long. I have evolved in my photography, but the drawing is still mediocre. I have gotten better technically, but it is so boring. I am getting bored with my own work. That is not a good thing. I need to experiment, practice and really work. The past days I have started focusing more on that. I haven't been logged on msn, and that has helped a lot. A huge distraction is gone. To be honest, I don't miss it much.

I have been doing sheets and sheets of speed sketches. I learned so much from that! Why haven't I done those before? I have always known they are good practice, but I guess my lazy gene has been too prominent. While drawing and having a tvshow on in the background, I have really enjoyed myself. I relax, I don't think, and I get the feeling that this is right for me. I wonder..Why is it so hard to do stuff that one enjoys so much? Am I scared of feeling good, or is it just my motivation that is lacking? And then why am I waiting? Motivation comes by DOING, not waiting. I know this too well.

I am still at Ida and Barbro's place, my sketch pad is all full, and I miss the rest of my supplies. Going back home soon, and then it is back to the practicing. I have this urge to paint again. All my painting supplies are still at my parents house, so I need to go there and get it all. I am itching to get all messy and not being restricted by the uses of a pencil. I know that one can do a lot with a pencil too, but it just doesn't feel the same way.

I can't promise any new finished work in the time to come, but I can promise a bunch of sketches. I have some waiting to be scanned as soon as I get home! No photo or drawing in this post, I am sorry. I guess this is more a reminder to myself that I am really going to practice. Maybe I will actually be able to do it too, when I have written it down and published it. Oh, and feel free to ask about it and kick me in the bum! I need it.

This post got way longer than I expected. I actually like writing, something I guess few knows. Maybe I will start writing more too. If anyone wants to read what I have to say.

As stated in my previous inspiration post, there are still some talented people left on DeviantArt. One of those people is Erik Jones aka The Iris On. I love well drawn women, and his women are allways so beautiful and sexy. The thing that really impresses me with his work, is his rendering of skin. He makes it look so fresh and realistic, no matter what colour he chooses.He also works in several styles, both traditional and digital. He's not afraid of experimenting, and that I really admire. This post will only contain traditional work, as I'm a sucker for traditional art. Brace yourself, it will be a long post!

One more thing I really admire about him as an artist, is that he shares. He shares how he workes, step by step photos, and tips. I personally think that sharing is one of the most important things you can do as an artist. You evolve and learn alot by doing that, and you will most likely get new friends in the progress.

I have never been a huge fan of public art. Specially the modern kind. To me, it seems like it's just lumps of metal put together by some pretentious artist that get too much money for it. However, I do like older statues, or modern art that gives the space a new dimention. Something one can explore. And as a girl, I do love shiny things and reflective surfaces. hehe.

Outside Østbanehallen in Oslo, there are some new art together wiith places to sit. You cant really see it well from a distance, but when I got close, I was fascinated. In the ground and on the seats, there are rows of butterflies in glass squares. Different kinds and colours, and so subtle, yet beautiful. As I dont have my beloved computer with me, you'll have to live with the ones taken with my phone. (And that polaroid app :p)

For the past week and the week to come, I am watching Ida and Babros apartment and cat.(Emma, she is adorable!) So I wont be with my beloved computer, and wont be able to scan drawings or edit new photos. For the remaining time I will add more inspiration. I promise more to come after this "vacation" :) So to entertain you while waiting; the cool cat I met today!

Have I ever mentioned how much I love the FX camera app on my HTC Desire? It's epic. Makes everything look so artsy-fartsy. haha. (I love that expression.) Any thoughts about adding photos from my phone taken in my everyday life? Because that is really something I CAN do while on this lousy mini laptop.

I kinda felt like a child while making these. They consist of two photos overlayed in the retouch menu of my camera. And of course some photoshop. Sometimes I just have to do something without caring what the end result will be.

Elisabeth Kostova caught my attention with her first book The Historian a few years back. So when I came upon her new book, The Swan Thieves, there was no doubt I had to read it. And it did not dissapoint. Once in a while I read a book that contain all the right elements, that captivates me from cover to cover. This is one of them. This novel is about art, historiy, psychology, a mystery, love and vivid characters I can relate to. It even made me rethink my own art and my approach to life as a creative person. It inspired me like no book has done in ages.

This series is one of my all time favourites from fashion gone rouge. It has this ethereal feel to it, and I love the multipe layers. According to the photographer, this effect is not double exposure or photoshop..All I can think of, is that he's used huge pieces of glass that reflected the nature around. If that is the case, it is quite ingenious! Inspirational, indeed!

Boho Chic Barbro

A few weeks ago, my good friend Desiree was gonna work on a school assignment, and I decided to tag along. The model is the allways wonderful Barbro Andersen, whom I love dearly. It was extremely windy that day, and Barbro almost got lost to sea, together with our equipment. It was a fun day!

The location is Huk at Bygdøy, just a few minutes away from where I live. Need to revisit that place a day I wont freeze to death!

Fredag var det duket for den store shoot-dagen! Frøydis skulle gjøre det hun kunne best, nemlig være modell. Sminke og hår sto Ingeborg Tharaldsen for. Desireé var også med som fotograf, og det ble nok noen bra bilder fra henne og!

Tekopper

Er det noe det er mange bilder av for tiden, så er det tekopper. Spesielt de gamle håndmalte man har funnet på loftet eller kjelleren. Mine fant jeg i kjelleren. Og som alle andre falt jeg pladask. De er så fine! Så jeg bestemte meg for at jeg og ville være med på moroa.

Noe nytt og annerledes! Yvonne var frivillig offer..hun så mer eller mindre freaky ut. For tiden lærer jeg meg retusjering, og har brukt litt på det bildet her. Skal leke mer med bildene i den serien snart :)

Endelig har jeg fått den kamerabagen jeg så sårt har trengt :D Den har plass til alt, pluss litt til. Ergo, jeg slipper veske i tillegg, og alt er trygt samla på et sted når det ikke er i bruk. :D
I går henta jeg også et ekstra batteri, og 16GB minnekort. Så nå er jeg klar for lange turer og mange bilder!
